Playwriting: The First Draft (February 6 – April 16)
Instructor: Alex Lewin

Have an idea for a play? Our 10-week course will give you the tools and the time to turn your material into a complete draft. Students will work according to a curriculum that includes writing exercises and instruction on the common practices and modes of play construction, while also reading some short plays that will be used as models. Each student will, finally, write a complete draft of a play.

Casebook: The Making of Food and Fadwa (March 27 – May 22)

This season, New York Theatre Workshop inaugurates a new Public Program called CASEBOOK. Each season, NYTW will designate one of its productions to be a “case study,” which will allow a general audience unprecedented access to the artists involved in the creation of a new work as it is happening. This class is appropriate for theatre lovers of all experience levels who want a true insider’s view of the life of a theatre artist and the process of realizing a full professional production.

Choreography + Text: Translating Source Material into Performance (Jan 21 – 22)

Instructors: John Collins and company members of Elevator Repair Service

Led by Artistic Director John Collins, four members of the ensemble will show class participants Elevator Repair Service's unique process of using found video, text and dance. After a short video demonstration and discussion about ERS' working methods, participants will be asked to put them into practice, using learned choreography, a piece of music, and several found objects to create a group performance. This hands-on, experiential workshop is appropriate for theatre-lovers of all levels who are curious about ensemble-generated work.
